Huntsville Homeless Seva
March 16, 2018
The Huntsville - Downtown Rescue Mission (DRM), a homeless shelter served dinner to one-hundred and fifty people between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM. The dinner consisted of rice and peppers, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, and sliced pineapple.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear… Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them… Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” - Matthew 6:25-29
“Everything I do is for your sake. I am surprised that you do not recognise this… There is no trace of selfishness in Me anywhere. I have no fear of any sort.” - Sathya Sai Speaks 28:2
As the setting Sun sent its heavenly rays through the window at the Downtown Rescue Mission, another beautiful message was delivered by the resident preacher, who reminded those gathered there for the evening meal that they should not worry because God is in control and knows what to do far better than anybody! On this occasion, a young mother brought her two sons along for the food service to help serve and to teach them about how other people experience hardships. The Sai Youth who joined them realised at this time, that Seva is what the Lord Himself does. It is also what He has been preparing all of His devotees to do more of, by remoulding them and purifying them, through greater acts of service and the bestowal of deeper levels of wisdom. A new legion of Arjunas is being forged!
Life can become a seemingly ceaseless flow of activity and the mind immersed in the world can become increasingly unwieldy. So, in His Divine Discourse in Singapore on March 16, 2018, Bhagawan encouraged His children to spend a few minutes with the Lord each day. Although He continues to urge His devotees to hand over all of their difficulties to Him, they continue to struggle with this and keep asking Him on how to accomplish this! Yet somehow, Seva has a way of putting things into perspective for everyone. The devotees are, after all, like children, being guided by their Divine Mother Sai, who wants them to contemplate on how they are being cared for, even if they are not always aware of it. They need to only follow Him in His footsteps as He continues to lead the way across the sands of time, like the beacon of a lighthouse during a stormy night at sea. Sai-incidentally, in this hall at the Downtown Rescue Mission, known for its lovely murals, the image of Christ rescuing Peter when his faith faltered is reflected currently in the lives of many devotees!
